Background of the Study

Job satisfaction is a critical determinant of employee motivation, engagement, and overall organizational success. It reflects how content employees are with their work, including factors such as compensation, work environment, job security, and opportunities for career advancement (Okojie & Nwafor, 2023). In the Nigerian manufacturing sector, job satisfaction plays a pivotal role in ensuring high productivity and minimizing turnover rates. Flour Mills, a major player in the Nigerian manufacturing industry, operates in Kebbi State, where it contributes significantly to local employment and economic growth. However, the level of job satisfaction among its employees remains an under-explored area.

Understanding the drivers of job satisfaction at Flour Mills can help address issues related to employee retention, performance, and overall organizational efficiency. This study will assess the factors influencing job satisfaction among employees of Flour Mills in Kebbi State and how these factors impact their overall work performance and commitment to the organization.

Statement of the Problem

Although Flour Mills has established various policies aimed at enhancing job satisfaction, there is insufficient empirical evidence on the actual levels of satisfaction among its employees, particularly in Kebbi State. Factors such as compensation, career development opportunities, work-life balance, and organizational culture may influence job satisfaction levels. This study seeks to investigate the job satisfaction levels of Flour Mills employees and determine the key factors that contribute to their overall satisfaction or dissatisfaction.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the level of job satisfaction among employees of Flour Mills in Kebbi State.

  2. To identify the factors that contribute to or detract from employee job satisfaction at Flour Mills.

  3. To propose recommendations for improving job satisfaction and employee retention at Flour Mills.

Research Questions

  1. What is the level of job satisfaction among employees of Flour Mills in Kebbi State?

  2. What are the key factors that influence job satisfaction at Flour Mills?

  3. How can Flour Mills improve employee job satisfaction to enhance retention and productivity?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Employees of Flour Mills in Kebbi State exhibit moderate to high levels of job satisfaction.

  2. Compensation, career development opportunities, and work environment significantly influence job satisfaction at Flour Mills.

  3. Improving job satisfaction levels will result in higher employee retention and increased productivity at Flour Mills.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on employees working in Flour Mills in Kebbi State. The limitations of the study may include the subjective nature of job satisfaction and potential biases in self-reported data from employees. Additionally, the findings may not be representative of job satisfaction levels in other manufacturing firms across Nigeria.

  • Job Satisfaction: The extent to which employees feel content and fulfilled in their jobs, based on various factors such as compensation, work environment, and career development.

  • Employee Retention: The ability of an organization to retain its employees over a long period, minimizing turnover and reducing recruitment and training costs.

  • Organizational Efficiency: The effectiveness with which an organization achieves its goals, often linked to employee satisfaction, productivity, and engagement.
